PROJECT STATEMENT
At the upper eastern side of Mandaue, Cebu, just close along a major road, U.N Ave., is Barangay Paknaan. Barangay Paknaan is a neighborhood that has a population of 30,532 people (PhilAtlas, 1990). Residents’ livelihoods include selling in wet and dry markets, public transportation drivers, and other manual labor. Moreso, the community’s location is quite far from the center of Mandaue, which makes access to the main public markets quite difficult and costly when commuting. Also, small independent businesses that wish to sell food items, whether by products or meals, would have to deal with a costly delivery of supply from the center. Using the consultations through text and workshops organized by TAMPEI and CWTS, the group was able to identify 2 key action steps for the community. First, the representative from SMASH has explicitly requested fro a residential house model to build on abandoned lots in the Block 2 green area and Block 4 Lot 1, respectively 22 square meters and 28 square meters in size. Additionally, the community’s consultation with CWTS Econ prompted the latter to organize a greenhouse workshop. To supplement this, our group has decided to add a greenhouse model to use as a blueprint to build their own greenhouse where the community can grow their own crops and communaly share the harvest. Additionally, the residential house and greenhouse building can serve as a community project that will promote camaraderie among the members of the Barangay.
