FACCADE RENOVATIOON
ARCH 22: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IV
The Manila Film Center is a government building located in the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex in Pasay City designed in the Brutalist tradition by Filipino architect Froilan Hong in 1981. The building is infamously known for a construction accident that claimed the lives of at least 168 workers (De Guzman, 2019). Its role as the host of the first International Manila Film Festival the following year is eclipsed by the gruesome details of this tragedy. These stories continue to haunt (and are attached to) the building’s identity.
But what if the Manila Film Center could re-invent itself? What if social stigma can be transformed by architecture in a way that does not deflect from the tragic past and still honors the lives that were lost?
This design exercise transforms the façade of the Manila Film Center guided by the principles of adaptive reuse and inspired by the design philosophy or school of thought of a current and prominent architect selected by the student. The goal of the project is to develop problem-solving skills, creative thinking, and ideation that follow a specific design approach.
