COMMUNITY PARKKS

The increasing recognition of the linkages between place and well-being presents challenges to re-examine our urban fabric. This has been exacerbated by the worsening pandemic situation in metropolises like Quezon City. Communities are looking for broader opportunities for leisure, play, and socialization. Because of this, the Landscape Design II students came up with creative community park solutions that call for the needs of the public.

Over the course of 14 weeks, the two classes of LArch 12 were divided to seven groups and were assigned respectively to each district in Quezon City. The groups looked at incorporating multi-generational aspects to balance the diverse needs for outdoor spaces. This delicate balance was governed by the student’s preliminary understanding of the approaches in green urban living, urban forestry, cultural landscapes, urban agriculture, and flood-responsive landscape design.

The community parks feature designs ranging from plazas to therapeutic and sensory gardens to children’s playgrounds.

With the Haraya 2021 theme ‘Points and Tangents’, the community designs touched upon the curves and edges of human needs to sharpen the attention towards community-centered landscape design. The output resulted from expansive exploration of special needs of the population to expand rich experiences and opportunities. The showcase of students, albeit in their 1st year of landscape design, seeks to inspire landscape architecture practitioners to turn site constraints to impactful designs that truly make a difference.
